In 1985 the first custom home by Michael C. Brown was started and turned over to his client, Mr. Jay Gentry. Since that time, Michael C. Brown has been committed to becoming Williamsburg's premier custom homebuilder.

Through a continual program of industry education, Michael C. Brown Custom Builder has become the market leader in introducing new idea's and products to the Williamsburg market. After two decades of growing success, Michael C. Brown Custom Builder has established itself as one of the premier custom homebuilders in Virginia.

Currently the company is building homes in such fine communities as Governor's Land at Two Rivers, Ford's Colony, Kingsmill, Berrett's Ferry, and Stonehouse; some in excess of $1,500,000. We hope that you will give our company an opportunity to show you that we can make your dream a reality.

Whom do we build homes for?
Many times we are faced with the prospective client statement of "well our house is too small for you to consider building"; our response has been and will always be 'it's not the size/square footage of the house but the quality standards that our clients wish to achieve for their home'. Our focus is to remain the premier custom home builder in the Williamsburg area who specializes in serving those clients which demand that their homes be built to the highest quality specifications and possess unique characteristics that no other builder can provide or has the ability to provide.

What "kind" of homes do we build and where do we build them?
The general goal of every custom home builder is "quality"; whether or not it is truly the end result can only be ascertained by the builders post-construction long term relationship with their clients and the re-sale performance of the houses they build for each client. Michael C. Brown Custom Builder has consistently established long-term, post-construction relationships with each one of their clients. The re-sale performance of a Michael C. Brown Custom Builder home has superiorly outperformed its competitor's in both equity return to its clients and "for sale" days on the market.

Michael C. Brown Custom Builder will continue to be a leader in the Williamsburg custom builder market. We are committed to devoting our company's knowledgeable resources in serving our clients to the highest possible standards available in the custom home builder market.

Quite simply our company specializes in the highest quality homes built strictly in the Williamsburg area. Our philosophy is that we would rather build ten 1,000 square foot homes of the highest quality and possess unique features and/or products versus building one 10,000 square foot box that is just that, a box with no character. This isn't any fun and not our goal in business. This business as far as our owner and founder is concerned is no longer based solely upon the "profit" aspect but on being and remaining the "go to" builder when it comes to building the premier quality homes in Williamsburg. Why is this? We would love to tell you why this has become a "love" more than a business.

What is the basic philosophy of Michael C. Brown Custom Builder?
While most custom builders maintain a "behind the door" philosophy of "find the least expensive way to build it, keep face to face time with each client to a minimum, and make the most money possible" our philosophy is diametrically opposed to the typical custom home builder.

  1. Spend the same amount of money that our client would spend with another builder but find a way to make the product or system significantly better; i.e., there are a number of ways that a builder can spend the same X amount of dollars and have two significantly different levels of quality. This may be hard to accept or understand but we have found that this can be achieved in many cases. The fortunate situation for us is the fact that most builders do not have the time to educate themselves; i.e.,. either they just don't care to become a better builder or they don't have the time to educate themselves through industry related classes/materials.
  2. We encourage as much face to face time as possible with our clients. Custom homebuilding is a very "gray area" business. The more communication you have with each client assures that you as a builder will meet or exceed the expectations of the client. Without constant contact with the client a builder has scripted certain failure in succeeding with their clients.
  3. Yes, we strive to make a profit. We have to or we won't be around to service our past clients for the decades to come.

This is very evident with recent events in our community whereas well known builders have gone out of business; where does this leave the clients who had their houses built by these companies? We have to make a profit; it all lies in whether it is a fair profit or an excessive one. For the past ten years our profit margins have been at or just below the national average as quoted in the various trade publications. We feel this important and supports/justifies our current pricing philosophy. More importantly we strive to maximize the quality standards for the same money spent and customer service/support. We hope that we can provide these goals to your project.

The absolute goal of Michael C. Brown Custom Builder is to provide the highest quality product at a reasonable price that provides for a fair profit to our company. Whereas, when the house is complete and our client has moved in the first words from their mouths is "There is definitely a difference in the level of quality, and we appreciate it!"
